I was working in AutoCAD recently and kept using the Select Similar command over and over. It was becoming such a hassle to constantly type it out. Then I realized I could create a shortcut that would save me so much time in my day-to-day work. I found out how to assign “SS” as my custom keyboard shortcut for that command, and now all it takes is two keystrokes to get the job done.
It’s pretty simple to set up and once you learn this technique, you can use it to any command you prefer. First, you need to find the ACAD.PGP
file that AutoCAD uses to store command aliases. I opened it up by using the AI_EDITCUSTFILE command and then typing ACAD.PGP
saw I could easily copy and edit existing aliases or create new ones. I added my own custom alias for Select Similar, and just like that, my AutoCAD setup became way more efficient. After saving the changes in this file, and refreshing the file in AutoCAD with the command REINIT, my new shortcut was ready to go.
This little change made a huge difference for me, and it can work for any command you use regularly. I thought it might be helpful to you too.
Let me know if you give it a try, and if you want video instructions here it is.
